Mozilla intros new API for Firefox add-ons
Firefox is the good web browser , its performance is very good it is more faster web browser than the other web browser so it is more famous in the market due to which mozilla developers developed some new add ons to the firefox that will really help the computer support users to operate the mozilla firefox with some new advanced features.
In the recent visit in BANGALORE, INDIA: Mozilla foundation, recently announced that it has introduced Jetpack, an API that allows developers to write Firefox add-ons with the use of simple web technologies.
Jetpack would provide developers with a platform that would allow them to create Firefox add-ons, which are easy to code, deploy with the use of already known technologies such as HTML, CSS and Javascript.
An official blog of Mozilla lab stated, "With Jetpack, we're building upon our experience over the last four years empowering a community of more than 8,000 developers to produce more than 12,000 add-ons to imagine and build the next generation of the add-ons platform."
It added that they want to grow their community of of developers by orders of magnitude through making add-on creation much more accessible, and yet more powerful by developing it as an extensible platform for innovation itself.
Jetpack is an open source project and everyone is welcome to participate in its design, development and experimentation.
It would allow new features to be added to the browser without a restart or compatibility issues, resulting in little to no disruption to the online experience.

How to clear cache in AOL

New Features in Microsoft Internet Explorer 8
IE8, which can be downloaded free, has cool new add-ons : "Web slices" let you quickly call up selected content from a Web page — such as updates from an Amazon’s auction page — via the IE8 favorites bar; "accelerators" make it easier to cut and paste text from one page and insert it 0n another. Beyond that, IE8 has restored some 0f Microsoft's lost Market Share. Mike Nash, corporate vice president of Windows product management, insists IE8 is uniformly faster at loading Web pages than Firefox 3.0, despite discussions in tech circles about this claim.
"I feel very good that IE8 will be a reason to keep using IE," Nash said in an interview. "And for our previous customers, who may not be using IE today, IE8 will be a compelling reason to come back."
Web browsers were once so mundane that Microsoft took five years to upgrade IE6.0, introduced with Windows XP in 2001, to IE7. Millions still use IE6. Meanwhile, Firefox, introduced in late 2004, has racked up significant market share and popularized features, such as tab browsing, which lets you quickly click back to several open Web pages.
As of last month, Firefox commanded a 22.00% global market share vs. 68.00% for IE, according to Net Applications. Meanwhile, Opera, Apple's Safari and Google's Chrome are staking out potentially huge new turf for browsers on computing devices other than laptops and desktop PCs.
Web browsers have emerged as the doorway to an interactive Internet, which people are increasingly accessing on mobile devices, cars, TV recorders, even video gaming consoles. "We're really happy to see Microsoft isn't standing still anymore," says Mike Beltzner, Firefox director of development. "But we're not standing still, either."
Firefox 3.5, due this summer, will up the ante by supporting HTML 5, a new Web standard that makes it easier to embed videos on Web pages, and "canvas," which lets artists hand draw images on Web pages.
Apple and Google are moving aggressively in browsing on cellphones, while Opera is gaining a foothold with its Opera Mini, a free cellphone browser popular with BlackBerry and Windows Mobile users. And 0pera is the browser that connects Nintendo's Wii gaming console to the Web. "Our browser runs on any platform or device," says Rod Hammlin, Opera senior vice president.
Microsoft supplies a version of IE for Windows Mobile devices, and a separate Web interface for Xbox 360.
IE8 could help the software giant regain ground in these browser wars. "So long as IE8 delivers as advertised, I believe it could help slow or even largely halt Windows users moving to alternative browsers," says Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT. "Whether that will be enough to draw back customers who have already migrated remains to be seen."

Why IE8 As My Default Browser
There is absolutely no doubt that IE8 is better than IE7, its predecessor. It is faster, and certainly more stable. There are also some great new additions; I am quite fond of IE8's Web Slices. I utilized a web slice for Digg's top stories and to observe some stock quotes and I found it seamless and quite enjoyable.
With that said, however, I seem to be plagued with an issue when opening IE8 and opening tabs. Even with my new tab page set to "Blank Page", I encounter a wait of 2-3 seconds prior to the opening of said tab. I experience this delay in no other browser but IE8, and strangely enough only on my 64-Bit system
Google Chrome, on the other hand, lacks Web Slices and there is not as much integration as IE8 (though aesthetically, it's beautiful).
In terms of speed, Chrome opens quicker and I do not experience a ‘tab delay' problem. With regard to actual browsing speed, both browsers seem to be roughly in the same area. Certainly there are websites which load quicker on Chrome, but the same is true for IE8 as well.
In short, I can safely say that the reason why IE8 has not secured the position of default browser on my machine is due in large part to the slight delay I experience throughout using the software (which may be a localized problem, certainly), and its javascript inferiority to Google Chrome.
What is important here, is not that Google Chrome holds the default position on my computer, but that IE8 falls short for very few reasons. No longer do we associate IE8 with the issues that plagued its predecessors. Given the direction in which Microsoft seems to be moving, I think we can certainly remain optimistic about the future.
Until then, I'll dabble in Internet Explorer 8 occasionally while remaining faithful to my flavour of the week: Google Chrome.

How to Use IE Securely
Internet Explorer provides 4 zones for which you can establish separate security settings. The purpose of this article is to introduce these 4 zones and how to use them to ensure you safely browse the Internet. By following the advice in this article, you’ll shrink your chances of being the victim of an attack when you inadvertently visit a malicious Web site.
The 4 zones in Internet Explorer are :
• Internet
• Local intranet
• Trusted sites
• Restricted sites
The Internet Zone
The Internet zone is the zone that contains all the Web sites you haven’t placed in another zone. Think of it as the default zone. The settings you establish for the Internet zone are applied to any Web site that you haven’t specifically listed in the Local intranet, Trusted sites or Restricted sites zones.
Since the Internet zone’s settings are the default, you should use the highest level of security that you can for this zone. Generally, a “Medium” security level is sufficient, but since many Internet Explorer Support vulnerabilities absorb active scripting, it’s best to use the “High” level of security so that active scripting is disabled by default. Changing to a “High” security level will make parts of some Web sites not work properly, but you can always add a site to your Trusted sites zone if you want to allow the active script to run.

Intranet Zone

Browsers Get Hacked Before Phones at Security Show
Mobile devices took the spotlight at the CanSecWest security conference Wednesday, but it was browser support bugs that got all the attention at the show's popular hacking competition.
Conference organizers had invited attendees to display attacks that targeted previously unknown flaws in browsers or mobile devices in the show's annual Pwn2Own contest. By the end of the first day, IE, Safari and Firefox had all been hacked, but nobody took a crack at the five mobile devices up for grabs, even though the contest's sponsor, TippingPoint, is paying out US$10,000 per mobile bug, twice what it's paying for the browser flaws.
For the attacks to count, hackers had to use the bugs to get code to run 0n the machine. The bugs uncovered through the contest get vetted by TippingPoint, and are then handed over to the associated software vendors to be patched.
The first browser to go was Apple's Safari browser running on a Macintosh. Last year's contest winner, Charlie Miller quickly hacked into the Mac using a bug he found while preparing for last year's event. Though Miller's Apple hacking has given him a lot of attention, Safari is an easy target, he said in an interview right after his hack. "There are a lot of bugs out there."
Microsoft's Internet Explorer didn't fare much better, though. Another hacker, who identified himself to organizers only as Nils, had soon hacked IE8. Nils then wowed the hackers in the room by unleashing exploits for Safari and Firefox as well.
Miller said he wasn't surprised to see the mobile phones go without attack. For 0ne thing, the rules governing the mobile phone attacks were strict, requiring that the exploit work with virtually no user interaction. In coming days, these restrictions will loosen, giving hackers more avenues of attack.
Still, Miller says that breaking into mobile devices like the iPhone is "harder" than PC hacking. Though security researchers like Miller may be interested in smart phones right now, to date there hasn't been a lot of research and documentation of how to attack mobile platforms. "They don't make it easy to do research on it," Miller said.
But that may be changing, according to Ivan Arce, chief technology officer with Core Security Technologies.
While the Pwn2Own contest was going on, researchers from Arce's company spoke in another conference room, demonstrating a program they wrote that could be used by attackers once they have managed to hack into a mobile phone. The interesting thing about Core's shellcode software is that it can run on both the Apple iPhone and Google Android, showing that criminals could theoretically write one piece of code that would run on both platforms.
In recent months, research into mobile devices has picked up and has recently reached a "tipping point," where more successful attacks are likely to emerge, Arce said.

Even though it falls far behind other browser software’s such as Google's Chrome and Mozilla's Firefox on standard JavaScript benchmarks such as Sun Spider, the company has been at pains to convince users that the browser(Browser fix) is a speed leader.
True, JavaScript performance has greatly improved in IE8 over IE7, but still trails other browsers by about five-fold. But Microsoft's Dean Hachamtovitch, who heads up the IE8 team, contends that scripting performance is not the number-one determinant of browsing speed. The company has set up a testing lab with a high-speed camera to compare actual page loading times for the top 26 websites (based on comScore MediaMetrix data), and they've released a video showing the results.
Microsoft reps told us that this video would be appearing on the main Internet Explorer page eventually. A white paper diving more deeply into the testing methodology and results has also been issued.
The video is pretty much a text slideshow, making the point that benchmarks don't tell the whole story about web browsing speed: significant factors include network connectivity, latency, resource competition, and caching in the browser and router. The testing compares IE8 with older IE versions, as well as against shipping versions of Firefox and Chrome. Micrsoft tests the top 25 sites daily, and tens of thousands of other sites each month.
The first test site in the video shows why you need a high-speed video camera: it shows loading Google in the three browsers, and because that site is pretty light and quick to load, it's pretty much impossible to tell which browser loads fastest. The high-speed camera shows IE coming in just a couple milliseconds ahead of Firefox and 10 ms faster than Chrome. The conclusion is that Internet Explorer comes out ahead two out of three times, and in some cases the differences are measured in seconds rather than milliseconds. IE comes out ahead on three times as many sites as Firefox. The breakdown for the top ten websites from Microsoft's testing is in the graphic at the top of the page.
Some of the more amusing results in this list are how Chrome wins for MSN.com, Firefox wins for Microsoft.com, and IE wins for Mozilla.com, Google.com, and for Microsoft's rival, Apple.com, by a good margin. It makes a case that Microsoft is being candid with these results that they'd publish better times for competitors' browsers on their own sites. It is also noticeable, that for most sites, the differences are pretty minor. (Microsoft's video mentions that the average eye blink takes .32 seconds—a longer time than many of the differences in these results.)
Microsoft makes a pretty good case that this kind of testing is more relevant than artificial scripting benchmarks, and the white paper makes for good reading on the topic. I'd be interested to see whether the other browser makers try to come up with a similar real-world testing methodology. I also still question why Microsoft, with its vast programming resources to draw upon, cannot come up with a JavaScript engine that's at least in the performance ballpark with those from Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. The answer I always receive is, "IE has actually improved JavaSeript performance, but we're focusing on other performance bottlenecks that have greater impact on real-world browsing."
Fair enough. But if the future of the net is Web applicationss, which rely heavily on scripting, Internet Explorer will need to catch up with the competition in rendering script

I'd be interested to see whether the other browser makers try to come up with a similar real-world testing methodology. I also still question why Microsoft, with its vast programming resources to draw upon, cannot come up with a JavaScript engine that's at least in the performance ballpark with those from Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. The answer I always receive is, "IE has actually improved JavaSeript performance, but we're focusing on other performance bottlenecks that have greater impact on real-world browsing."
Fair enough. But if the future of the net is Web applicationss, which rely heavily on scripting, Internet Explorer will need to catch up with the competition in rendering script

Firefox Testing new-tab behavior
Opening a new tab in a Web browser shows a lot of prime but empty real estate, and now the programmers behind Firefox are following at Apple Safari and Google Chrome in trying to make it more useful.
Mozilla interface guru posted some screenshots of a new way to fill the new-tab screen with something useful but not too taxing for the computer.
Along the right edge is the "quick-access bar," a stack of thumbnail views of your fashionable pages selected on the basis of how recently and frequently you visited them. In the upper left are buttons that take various actions. For example, if you've selected some text on a Web page before opening the new tab, that text will be presented as a search that can be performed by clicking the button in the new tab.
Those with the latest developer build of Firefox 3.1 can try the new-tab behavior through a Firefox extension. To do so, see Raskin's three-step process described on the Mozilla Labs blog.
Mozilla has been testing new-tab options since January. "From the feedback from the last two rounds of new tab concepts, we know that the page needs to load instantly that it shouldn't be visually distracting; and that it should be a launch point into your daily activities," Raskin said.
Safari 4, in beta, and Google Chrome both offer an array of popular Web pages when opening a new tab. Google's Toolbar can bring the Chrome behavior to Firefox and Internet Explorer.

Secunia's study found that 114 security flaws were reported in 2008 for Mozilla's Firefox browser, almost four times as many flaws as other popular browsers. In contrast, Secunia said, 31 vulnerabilities were reported for versions of Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser support , while Opera and Safari claimed at least 30 and 32 reported security holes in 2008, respectively.
But the Secunia study also measured how nimbly Microsoft and Mozilla responded to vulnerabilities that the companies were notified about at the same time as the rest of the world. These types of "full disclosure" or "0 day" incidents are notable because they often include the publication of blueprints showing would-be attackers exactly how to use the flaws for criminal purposes. In either case, for each day that the vendor takes to ship an update to fix the flaw, users remain at a heightened risk of attack.
Secunia found that when it comes to fixing flaws that were first disclosed publicly or through online attacks, the tables were turned. Secunia found six instances last year in which Microsoft was publicly alerted to a vulnerability in its browser, including two that Secunia labeled "high" or "moderate" in severity. Mozilla apparently confronted just three such situations, all with vulnerabilities Secunia has classified as "less critical" or "not critical."
According to Secunia's tally, Mozilla took an average of 43 days to address these three flaw last year.
In contrast, Microsoft took exactly 111 days to ship updates that fixed the two more publicly revealed serious flaws. Additionally, the company still hasn't patched three of the four other less critical IE flaws disclosed last year (the window of exposure for those flaws currently stands between 230 days and 295 days).
The finding that IE users are exposed to more serious browser flaws for longer periods of time than their Firefox counterparts is not an aberration, but it actually represents something of an improvement for Microsoft: In 2007, Security Fix published an analysis which found that for a total of 285 days in 2006, exploit code for at least 11 "critical" flaws in IE was made publicly available online before Microsoft was able to ship updates to fix them.

The second month of 2oo9 was a tad different than the first one when it comes to browsers stealing users from each other. But we're still seeing the same trends: IE fighting a losing battle to Firefox at the top (less than 51 percentage points difference between them), Safari happily settled down in third place after consistent growth in 2008, Chrome having just enough market share to claim fourth place, and poor Opera struggling in fifth place. In February, Firefox, Chrome and Opera were the only browsers to show any positive growth; first-party browsers IE and Safari both fell.
Between January and February, Internet Explorer support dropped just 0.11 percent (from 67.551 percent to 67.441) and Firefox jumped 0.241 percentage points (from 21.531 percent to 21.771 percent). Safari dipped from 8.291 percent to 8.021 percent while Chrome and Opera barely budged: Chrome gained 0.031 percentage points (1.121 percent to 1.151 percent) while Opera gained a minute 0.011, from 0.701 percent to 0.711 percent.

As usual, things at Ars look very different: only Firefox and IE had the same trend on Ars as on the rest of the Web. Safari gained, while Chrome and Opera dropped. Firefox's lead remains unmistakable, and the default browsers for Windows and Mac OS X still show their presence. Chrome's lead over Opera is much more significant at Ars, but this month it did not widen.

Hackers Target IE 7 Browser Again
Users who failed T0 patch their computers after Microsoft released its monthly Patch Tuesday update last week could be in trouble - an Internet Explorer browser vulnerability f0r which the patch was sent 0ut is under attack again. This IE patch released last week, for an "Uninitialized Memory Corruption" vulnerability, was rated critical by Microsoft. Also known as CVE, the vulnerability stems from how IE deals with objects that have been deleted.
An attack discovered yesterday targeted that vulnerability again. "Malware crooks were quick to develop a working exploit for the vulnerability in Internet Explorer 7, which was part 0f the February Microsoft patch release," said Raul Mohandas, in antivirus vendor McAfee's Avert Labs bl0g.
Hackers can exploit the Uninitialized Memory Corruption vulnerability by building a Web page that remotely executes code when it is visited.
Mohandas' blog posting said the latest attack is launched through a Microsoft Word document that contains an embedded ActiveX control. The ActiveX control connects to a Web site hosting the attack when it is opened.
This method is similar to the follow up to the zero-day attack on IE 7 in December that forced Microsoft to issue an out 0f band patch, Mohandas said in the blog.
Craig Schmugar, senior threat researcher at McAfee, told InternetNews.com he is not sure whether or not hackers had reverse engineered the patch issued last week, although there is a good possibility that this is the case. "There's the concept of Exploit Wednesday on the heels of Patch Tuesday where, in the course of providing a fix, you provide an opportunity for the bad guys to attack people who can't patch their systems that quickly," he added.
However, B0jan Zdmja, writing 0n the Internet Storm Center's Web site, appears convinced that the hacker reverse engineered the patch. The ISC was created in 2001 to provide free analysis and warning services to Internet users and organizations.
Users' troubles with their IE browser may not be over yet. Schmugar warned that, although the attacker is using a Word document now, nothing prevents the exploit from being used in a drive-by attack, where a tainted Web site automatically downloads malware onto visitors' sites. "We can, unfortunately, expect that this will happen very soon," he wrote on the ISC's Web site.
